Assisting with ADLs Elimination

Description
Elimination is the body's way of removing digestive and body chemical waste products and harmful substances referred to as toxins. The process of elimination is critical for the body to operate at its best. This course will examine the different routes of elimination, the wastes created and the Personal Care Worker role in providing support to the client for the elimination process.
Delivery

This is a self-paced course with optional knowledge check quizzes after each lesson. These non-graded quizzes allow you to check your understanding of the lesson objectives before proceeding to the next lesson. After the final lesson you will be required to take the final exam. You must score 70% or higher to pass the course and obtain a certificate of completion.

Objectives
  • Outline the process of elimination of body wastes
  • Identify factors which interfere with elimination of body waste
  • Identify abnormal signs and symptoms of common diseases and conditions which should be reported to the nurse including:
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Sweating
    • Pus, blood or sediment in urine
    • Difficulty urine
    • Describe the most common causes of Autonomic dysreflexia
    • Identify the type of injury associated with Autonomic dysreflexia
    • Describe symptoms which indicate a client's toileting needs
    • Describe bowel and bladder management programs
    • Measure and record urinary output from a bedpan or urinal
    • Measure and record urinary output from a urinary drainage bag
    • Measure and record urinary output from an incontinent individual
    • Accurately record the frequency of bowel movements
    • Accurately record the description of bowel movements
    • State the steps necessary to assist the client using the bathroom or commode
    • State the steps necessary to assist the client in using the urinal
    • State the steps necessary to assist the client in using the bedpan

Kathy Richie received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing from the College of St. Teresa with a minor in Psychology. She has over 13 years experience in the health care field and a decade of experience in the design, development and provision of adult/healthcare professional continuing education. Kathy also serves as director of the Heartland Regional Geriatric Education Center for southeastern Minnesota, which is supported by the Minnesota Area Geriatric Education Center, part of the University of Minnesota's Center on Aging.

Kathy is a member of the Program Services Committee of the Alzheimer's Association, Minnesota - North Dakota Chapter as well as a member of the Leadership Council for the Alzheimer's Association Southern Minnesota Regional Center.
